Wow, is it already August? What happened to summer? I knew we were getting into the last of the dogs days of summer (I’ve heard it lasts until Aug. 11), but I’m just starting to get the hang of it! I knew something was up when I kept seeing all those Back to School shopping signs!
Well, since I’m a dog, I don’t put much stock in those signs since I don’t go to school, not even obedience school! I’m just going to enjoy these last days of summer. Besides, the autumn equinox isn’t until Sept. 22, so it looks like I’ve got plenty of time.
By the way, did you know the “dog days of summer,” the hottest, laziest, days of summer doesn’t even have anything to do with dogs. We get blamed for everything! I say it’s the cat’s fault!
The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer the “dog days” because they associated the hottest days of the season with the Dog Star, Sirius, which is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, or “Large Dog.”
No wonder August also has Lazy Day (10th) and Relaxation Day (15th), although the last is just past the dogs days. August also has Assistance Dog Day (4th), International Homeless Animal Day (20th), National Dog Day (26th), so August has really gone to the dogs!
The one day that confuses me, however, is Work Like a Dog Day on the 5th. What does that even mean? I don’t know a whole lot of dogs who work, unless they’re on a ranch or pulling a sled up north. I haven’t worked a day in my life, except to work on my nap and I intend to keep it that way!
I’ve hear that the expression comes from England, where in the olden days men sawing a tree were called “top dog” and “under dog” and they worked like the dickens. And remember the old Beatles song? “It’s been a hard day’s night and I’ve been working like a dog!”
And as usual, August has a mix of days worth celebrating and odd days, some outright weird. For example, for every International Beer Day (3rd), National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, Friendship Day (5th), Senior Citizen’s Day (21st) and Women’s Equality Day (26th), there’s National Underwear Day (5th), Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day (8th), Just Because Day (27th) and Race Your Mouse Day (28th).
And August doesn’t have a holiday, unless you count International Beer Day, and I think a lot of people do. I know Dad will celebrate that day in style, probably with his own craft beer!
So enjoy the rest of the dog days and for Pete’s sake, do something nice for your dog or dogs (I know many of you have more than one. Mom?) on National Dog Day on Aug. 26.
