Happy Fourth of July! Hope everyone has a safe and sound Independence Day. Me? I have mixed feelings about the Fourth of July. I love all the festivities, the backyard barbecues, parades, flag waving and the colorful red, white and blue decorations. It’s a fun day for all.
But when it gets dark, that’s when I get apprehensive because that’s when the fireworks come out. It’s a little scary for us dogs with all the explosions, flashing lights and loud sounds. That’s when me and my siblings all seek shelter in the nice comfortable — and safe — house.
I’d suggest keeping an eye on your pets on the Fourth, we’re very sensitive creatures. Some folks aren’t too careful about when and where they light their fireworks, some of them illegal for obvious reasons. And there are more than 14,000 professional fireworks displays across the country and an untold number of amateur ones.
So have a safe and sound Fourth of July! Have fun, but be careful out there!
By the way, did you know that Independence Day celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Britain on July 4, 1776? But that the vote to become independent was made on July 2. They didn’t sign it until two days later because the document wasn’t ready yet! Does that mean we should be celebrating on July 2?
There are other things to celebrate in July in addition to our independence from Britain. July is also National Picnic Month, National Blueberry Month, National Anti-Boredom Month, National Hot Dog Month and National Ice Cream Month. Now that’s a month I can get behind celebrating!
So, of course, it being National Ice Cream Month, there are several days devoted to ice cream, with the 17th being National Ice Cream Day, as well as Peach Ice Cream Day. And there’s Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day (July 1), National Strawberry Sundae Day (7th), National Hot Fudge Sundae Day (25th) and Vanilla Ice Cream Day is the 23rd, which is also National Hot Dog Day. Now that sounds like a complete meal to me!
And what would a month be without its weird and wonderful days? One of the strangest, in my eyes, is the 3rd, which is Build A Scarecrow Day, Compliment Your Mirror Day, Disobedience Day and Stay out of the Sun Day. How do you celebrate those days??
And it doesn’t end there. The 10th is Don’t Step on a Bee Day; the 12th, Different Colored Eyes Day; Embrace Your Geekness Day on the 13th; the 15th is Cow Appreciation Day (go hug a cow?); Yellow Pig Day on the 17th; Ugly Truck Day on the 20th; and the 27th is Take Your Pants for a Walk Day (??).
There are some important or significant days too, such as World Population Day on the 11th; Bastille Day on the 14th, (mais oui!); Parent’s Day on the 24th; Father-in-Law Day and International Day of Friendship on the 30th; and one of my favorites, Mutt’s Day on the 31st.
Whew, July is one busy month! So what are you waiting for, get out there and celebrate!
