For a month named for the Roman God Mars, March sure has a lot of days dedicated to peaceful, happy and inspiring things. Not only is it National Women’s History Month, but it’s also Red Cross Month, Social Workers Month, Music in Our Schools Month and Irish American Month. There are also a number of days dedicated to these happier things.
For example, the month kicks off with a doozy: March 1 is Employee Appreciation Day, National Salesperson Day, Peanut Butter Lovers’ Day, World Day of Prayer and, believe it or not, National Pig Day. See what I mean?
There are no official holidays in March, unless you count St. Patrick’s Day (17th), Daylight Savings Time (10th) and National Puppy Day (23rd). There’s also Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, on March 5, which is a religious celebration, but a lot of folks see it as a holiday given the way people party. I hear a lot of beads are thrown around and people wear masks and act silly.
Here are some other days that kind of go against the whole war theme: Caregiver Appreciation Day and I Want You to Be Happy Day on the 3rd, 4 Hug a GI Day, 8 International (Working) Women’s Day, Girl Scouts Day and Plant a Flower Day on the 12th, 14 Learn about Butterflies Day, Everything You Do is Right Day and Freedom of Information Day on the 16th, International Earth Day and Spring Equinox on the 20th, Absolutely Incredible Kid Day and Fragrance Day on the 21st, National Goof Off Day on the 22nd, Make Up Your Own Holiday Day on the 26th, and Take a Walk in the Park Day on the 30th.
Of course, like every other month, March has its share of silliness, and I’m not talking just about Mardi Gras. For example, there’s March 3rd, If Pets Had Thumbs Day (I shudder at the thought!), Be Nasty Day on the 8th, Panic Day on the 9th, Worship of Tools Day on the 11th (isn’t that every day for many men?), Everything You Think is Wrong Day on the 15th, Extraterrestrial Abductions Day on the 20th, and Weed Appreciation Day on the 28th.
I for one am looking forward to the first day of spring, the spring equinox, on March 20th. Time to get up, shake off the cobwebs, and get outside and enjoy the spring weather!
Happy March to you!
