I gotta tell you, I have mixed feelings about October. We’re well past summer and now we’re into fall, but it still kind of feels like summer. October is one of the months that seems to fall in between summer and fall, like a season of its own. Even the month’s big holiday, Halloween, doesn’t come until the last day of the month.
I’m not sure I can wait that long to put on my costume that Mom has picked out for me and my siblings, Geno, Lulu and Hugo. Geno was Geno the Wonder Fish one year instead of the Wonder Dog. Geno actually looked pretty good as a fish. Wonder what I’m going to be? Can’t wait!
The other weird thing about October is that there is only one day devoted to dogs, National Fire Pup Day, which was Oct. 1, but there are two days for cats, National Feral Cat Day, Oct. 16 and National Cat Day, Oct. 29! But October is also National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, so I feel really good about that, since many of my best buds are shelter dogs.
In fact, since it is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, I’d like you to support and visit your local shelters, such as SPCA, Animal Friends Rescue Project, Peace of Mind Dog Rescue and Monterey County Animal Services. I know Mom is a big supporter because she usually takes us to all of their great fundraising events and we often get to meet some new four-legged friends.
(Mom here! In case you want more info on or to donate to these great organizations, here are their websites: spcamc.com,animalfriendsrescue.org, www.peaceofminddogrescue.org, and ccamc.org/adopt.html.)
Now while there are some weird and strange days in October, like National Moldy Cheese Day (Oct. 9), Hagfish Day (Oct. 21) and Chucky, The Notorious Killer Doll Day (Oct. 25) — where do they get these holidays? — there are some significant days too.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to bring more awareness of the disease and raise money. A lot of people tend to forget the steps to have a plan to detect the disease and to get others to do the same. So this is the month to make a fuss and shine a light on things people need to do.
Halloween is Oct. 31, but it’s also National Caramel Apple Day, National Magic Day, Girl Scout Founder’s Day and National Knock-Knock Jokes Day. So in the spirit of Halloween and the month of October — see what I did there? Spirit? — here’s a knock-knock joke:
Pooch your arms around me, baby!
Sorry about that! Well, have a great October and happy Halloween!
